What is Sports Medicine?

This is a specialty concerned with the prevention and treatment of injuries received during participation in sports or exercise. The physician specializing in Sports Medicine treats athletes of all levels, from professional athletes to recreational athletes.

Please note that orthopaedic problems often DO NOT require surgery. Exercise, physical therapy, medication and rest, as well as splinting or casting may be the recommended treatment for certain injuries. When indicated, such examples of conservative therapy may be administered by our surgeons and/or our professional staff. If surgery is needed, our surgeons are trained in the most advanced surgical procedures. We specialize in Joint Replacement surgery of the Hips, Knees and Shoulders. Our physicians also perform Arthroscopy, using a scope which often requires only a minimal incision and results in faster recovery. The West Coast Orthopaedic surgeons also utilize the surgical “Laser,” which is now recognized as state-of-the-art treatment for certain medical problems.
